It would be fun to try something like that, though. There was a cool article in Make about building a relay board to control powered halloween decorations using the parallel port on an old PC. Hook xmas lights to it instead, then you could get a script to click each relay on or off in sync with an mp3.
Here's the killer part: play the audio stream to an FM transmitter, and print the frequency on a yardsign. That way people driving by could hear the music that goes along with the light show, but the neighbors wouldn't have to.
I'll get right on that. I'll just add it to my list. Expect it in December, 2013.
